Food Inspection Detectors

Food inspection will normally use a fan beam X-ray source and linear array detector such as a LINX system, providing detection across a belt transporting food packages.

X-rays are effective at detecting both metallic and non-metallic contaminants such as glass. They can also be used for measuring fill factor and product counting.

Normally, single energy X-rays are used in this application but dual energy methods can be used to enhance contrast, which is important in detecting small fish or chicken bones.

LINX dual energy X-ray detection systems enable the fat-lean content in meat to be measured.

In order to determine whether food has been irradiated a photomultiplier module is used for the detection of photostimulated luminescence (PSL).
